The Extended Run Players

In 1996, a group of local theater notables and drama department staff at the ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ envisioned a readers’ theater for San Antonio to allow senior actors an opportunity to continue performing their craft without having to memorize lines.  With the energizing force of Sister Germaine Corbin, since retired, this vision became the Extended Run Players.

The group continues to offer performed readings twice each year at ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ and by special arrangement elsewhere in the community. A popular staple of its repertoire is “Memories on Review,” an engaging compilation of stories about World War II collected from real people in our area and interspersed with patriotic and popular songs of that era. The group has recently premiered a similar program entitled “Voices from Vietnam,” presenting true the experiences of veterans and their families with popular music of that era.

In recent years the group has produced adaptations of Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas, Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters, a pair of stories by Dr. Seuss, and The Belle of Amherst, a play by William Luce featuring the poetry and memoirs of Emily Dickinson, as well as a collection of choice excerpts from the plays of Shakespeare called “What You Will: Seniors Tackle Shakespeare” and Rex Dexter of Mars, a science fiction spoof performed as a radio show.

Proceeds from ERP’s performances go to a scholarship fund for promising theatre students at ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ.

The Extended Run Players welcome new members at any time. For more information about membership or to arrange for a special performance, send an email to extrunplayers@gmail.com.
